Seizing the means of attention - Surveillance ads
Few people need convincing that surveillance advertising is a terrible technology that need not exist. For those who do, I can only defer to more knowledgeable and eloquent authors.
Luckily, there are several ways to avoid seeing ads. The most universal one is using custom Domain Name System (DNS) resolvers. A DNS resolver provides your device with the phonebook of the internet. This phonebook is used to translate a domain name (reveriesofahuman.com) into a specific IP address (192.168.1.1).
Your device typically uses the DNS resolver pre-configured by your internet provider. However, you can manually override this and select a resolver which refuses to translate domain names which are known to only serve you ads. The result? No ads without having to install any app or extension.
I recommend to start with Mullvad's as it does not require any account and is hosted by a company with a solid reputation.
Only use trustworthy DNS resolvers to avoid DNS hijacking. For more info, you can always visit Privacy Guides.
